Map
Coverage by state, county and ZIP across datasets, saved searches and lead lists, with therapy lenses, per-capita and growth metrics, provider analytics, state compare and market opportunity.
Open Map -- in the sidebar under Markets. Requires Pro or Teams.
The Map turns a dataset, a saved search or a lead list into a map of the United States. Switch the metric, scope to a region, click states to drill in, or multi-select to compare. Providers, saved searches and lead lists also map by county and ZIP.
On Regular, the page shows a locked panel with Upgrade to Pro.
Tabs
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Map | The map, the side panel and the ranked table |
| Demographics | Gender and years since NPI issue for the mapped providers |
| Taxonomies | The mapped providers by primary specialty or subspecialty |
| Procedures | Their Medicare Part B services and Part B drugs |
| Financial relationships | Industry payments to them from CMS Open Payments |

| Compare states | Two states side by side |
| Market opportunity | States below the US average density, ranked by the gap |
The page header also has Export CSV (the ranked table below the map) and New cohort.
The Map tab
Toolbar
- Source -- QOPE datasets, one of your saved searches on the Providers table ("Saved search - name"), or one of your lead lists ("Lead list - name - N leads"). Saved searches and lead lists shared with you by teammates are listed with the owner's name.
- Dataset -- with QOPE datasets as the source, pick what to count (see the table below). Saved searches always map providers; lead lists map their providers, facilities and ACOs.
- Therapy lens -- All specialties, or Cardiology, Oncology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Family Medicine. Each lens maps to a set of specialties on the Providers dataset; Psychiatry also maps to inpatient psychiatric facilities on Facilities. When a lens has no mapping for the dataset you are on, the toolbar says not applied rather than silently returning zero.
- Metric -- see below. The toolbar also shows the US total, the population-weighted US average per 100K and, where the dataset has years, the US YoY change, so you can read a state as above or below the line.
Datasets
| Dataset | What it counts | Year filter uses |
|---|---|---|
| Providers | Individual and organizational NPIs | NPI enumeration year |
| Facilities | Medicare-certified facilities | Certification year |
| Laboratories | CLIA-certified labs | Participation year |
| Drug Recalls | FDA enforcement records | Recall year |
| Health Centers | HRSA health center sites | Year the site was added |
Metrics
| Metric | What the colour shows |
|---|---|
| Total | Record count per state |
| Per 100K | Count per 100,000 residents |
| YoY | Change in new records between the latest two years (for providers, new NPI enumerations) |
Total answers "where is the volume". Per 100K answers "where is the market dense relative to population" -- usually the more useful question for territory planning. YoY answers "where is it moving".
Per 100K uses U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for July 1, 2025 (Vintage 2025).
Year
All years or one year from 2021 to 2025, filtering on the dataset's year field (see the table above). YoY always compares the latest two years, so the year picker is off in YoY. It does not apply to a lead list.
Levels: State, County, ZIP
The panel at the top left of the map switches between State, County and ZIP.
- County and ZIP work for the Providers dataset, saved searches and lead lists.
- For the Providers dataset and saved searches, Qope loads every matching provider in the states you selected (nationwide when none are selected), up to 5,000. Above that, the panel tells you how many match and asks you to select fewer states or narrow the specialty. Loading providers uses one credit; if the load fails before any page arrives, nothing is charged. Lead lists map from the list itself.
- Each ZIP counts toward the county that holds most of its land area. The panel reports how many records were placed, how many have no ZIP on file, and any in ZIPs that are not on the map.
- County and ZIP levels show totals only, not per 100K or YoY.
Selecting states
Click a state to select it. Shift-click, or turn on Multi-select, to add or remove several. Selection lives in the URL, so a map view is shareable. Clicking a row in the ranked table selects that state too.
The side panel changes with the selection:
- Nothing selected -- Market signals. Up to five call-outs derived from the active dataset: Highest density and Most underserved (per 100K against the US average), Recall hotspot (recalls per 100K at 1.5 times the US average or more), and, on the Providers dataset, Lab gap (providers per lab at 1.25 times the US ratio or more) and Most stretched (providers per facility at 1.15 times the US ratio or more). A call-out appears only when its threshold is met. Click one to select that state.
- One state -- Cross-table summary. Its count in every dataset, each linking to that table filtered to the state, plus population, the active count per 100K and YoY new. Open (dataset) in (state) opens the table; View facilities on map opens the state's facility map (below).
- Several states. Combined total and per 100K, each state's count, Compare 2 states (or Compare top 2 of N states) to jump to Compare states, Save as cohort, and Export (dataset) in N states as CSV.
Regions
Above the ranked table, Regions select a preset group of states in one click: Northeast, Midwest, South, West, Pacific, Mountain, New England and Sun Belt. Clear empties the selection.
Ranked table
Below the map: every state (or county, or ZIP) ranked by count, with Per 100K or YoY, its share of the total, and a five-year sparkline where the dataset has years. Export CSV downloads it.
Cohorts on the Map
Map cohorts are now app-wide cohorts: saved on your account rather than in the browser, available on every device, and shareable with your team on Teams. Cohorts saved in the browser by older versions of the Map move to your account automatically.
Your active cohort's states are preselected when you open the Map. The notice under the title names the cohort; Ignore drops its states from the selection and Apply brings them back. Save as cohort (on the map and in the side panel) and New cohort open the cohort dialog with the selected states filled in.
Provider analytics tabs
Demographics, Taxonomies, Procedures, Financial relationships and Organizations analyze one group of providers: the Providers dataset (with the therapy lens, year and selected states), a saved search, or a lead list. With another dataset active, they ask you to switch to Providers or pick a saved search or lead list. Each tab names the group it describes and what it was built from.
- Up to 5,000 matching providers, the analytics cover all of them. Above that, they use a representative sample spread evenly across the group, and counts marked est. are scaled to the full group. When the group is sampled, Exact analytics for chips offer specialties small enough to load in full; pick one to analyze every provider in it instead of a sample.
- Demographics -- gender as recorded in NPPES, and years since the NPI was issued (a tenure signal, not graduation year; not available for lead lists). Lead list analytics cover the list's providers only.
- Taxonomies -- providers by Primary specialty or Subspecialty, from the primary NPPES taxonomy code.
- Procedures -- Medicare Part B fee-for-service billing for up to 200 providers of the group (evenly sampled above that): Services by volume or Drugs billed under Part B, with providers, in-facility share and allowed amount.
- Financial relationships -- CMS Open Payments general payments for a program year you choose: companies paying these providers, the most paid providers, and the nature of payment. For large groups the dollar totals cover a sample.
- Organizations -- hospitals, surgery centers, rural health clinics and FQHCs located in the same ZIPs as the group, ranked by how many of the group share the ZIP. This is location, not affiliation.
Compare states
Pick two states, a specialty (All specialties or a therapy area) and Total or Per 100K. Quick pick fills common pairs: Top 2 by total, Top 2 by per-100K, Largest vs smallest, Densest vs sparsest, Coastal pair. Each state card is tagged SATURATED, BALANCED or UNDERSERVED by which third of states its density falls in, and the cards compare total providers, providers per 100K and providers per facility, with the gap between them.
Market opportunity
Ranks the states whose provider density is below the US average, by how many providers they would need to reach it.
- Headline figures: US average density (population-weighted), Total gap to US average and Deepest deficit.
- Controls: specialty (All specialties or a therapy area), a minimum population floor (No floor, 1.0M, 1.5M, 3.0M or 6.0M; default 1.5M), and sort By gap, By % deficit or By population.
- Each row links to the Providers table for that state.
Facility map for a state
View facilities on map (from a single selected state) opens that state's facilities as pins at their real locations. It loads up to 500 facilities for the state and pins the ones already located; Geocode 6 more places the next batch. The header counts pinned and loaded facilities and those with an ER. Click a pin to open the facility record; Back to overview map returns.
Providers cannot be pinned -- the NPI registry has no per-NPI coordinates, so provider geography stops at ZIP.
Limitations
- County and ZIP views of providers are limited to 5,000 providers per load; narrow the states or the specialty for larger groups.
- Per-capita figures use static state population estimates, not a live census feed.
- YoY is computed from the same registry data the tables use, so a dataset that was backfilled shows apparent growth in the backfill year.
- Opening the Map uses one credit. See Usage and Limits.
