Top 100 Largest U.S. Nursing Homes by Certified Bed Count in 2026

The largest nursing home in this analysis is Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, with 843 certified beds in CMS's August 2026 Provider Information snapshot. The Plaza Rehab and Nursing Center follows with 816, and Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center follows with 815.

Those numbers answer a specific question: which retained CMS nursing-home provider records report the most certified beds? They do not tell us which home has the most residents, the largest campus, the highest revenue, or the best care.

This article ranks nursing homes in the 50 states and District of Columbia using the CMS Number of Certified Beds field. Each entry represents a CMS Certification Number, or CCN. The source contains 14,690 records; 14,670 remain eligible after geographic and bed-count exclusions.

How nursing-home size is measured

Certified beds provide a consistent measure for comparing records within this CMS file. They describe a reported capacity measure, rather than the number of residents present on a particular day.

CMS also publishes Average Number of Residents per Day. That field answers a different question. A home with more certified beds can have fewer residents than a smaller home, and a bed-count ranking alone cannot establish occupancy or utilization.

The distinction matters when evaluating facilities for research or market analysis. Certified beds can help identify high-capacity provider records. Assessing actual service volume requires additional measures and a compatible reporting period.

The nursing homes at the top

The first three entries are all in New York. Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale appears under CCN 335020 in Riverdale. The Plaza Rehab and Nursing Center appears under CCN 335462 in the Bronx, while Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center appears under CCN 335063 on Roosevelt Island.

Their reported ownership types differ. CMS classifies Hebrew Home as a nonprofit corporation, The Plaza as a for-profit partnership, and Coler as city government. These categories offer context about the provider records; they do not explain differences in care quality or independently establish an ultimate corporate owner.

The leading records offer a useful lesson for market research: similar certified capacity can sit within very different reported ownership categories. Segmenting the list by ownership or chain assignment is a reasonable next question, but the bed ranking alone cannot explain those differences.

The 100 largest records, including cutoff ties

The complete table uses the August 2026 snapshot. It contains 100 records, ending at competition rank 99 because two providers share the last two displayed positions at 336 certified beds. “Top 100” refers to the largest 100 records with all cutoff ties included.

Provider names, ownership categories, and chain names are reproduced as CMS reports them, including capitalization and names that appear truncated. A dash indicates a blank source value. Use the CCN when checking a name against another source.

How the top 100 was calculated

The ranking starts with the archived August 2026 CMS Nursing Home Provider Information CSV. The retained records must have a nonblank CCN, a location in the 50 states or District of Columbia, and a positive integer Number of Certified Beds.

Ten source records were excluded because their bed count was missing, nonnumeric, zero, or negative. Another ten were outside the geographic scope. The retained records contain no duplicate CCNs.

Records are sorted by certified beds from highest to lowest. Provider name and CCN determine display order when bed counts are equal. Equal counts receive the same competition rank: if two providers share second place, the next provider receives fourth place.

The 100th displayed position has 336 certified beds. Two records share that value and competition rank 99, so the table contains exactly 100 rows. There is no separate competition rank 100 in this snapshot. The rule includes every provider tied with the record at the 100th displayed position.

How to use the ranking

For researchers, the list offers a starting population of comparatively large CMS-listed nursing-home records. Start with a specific question: are you studying certified capacity, resident census, or organizational affiliation? The answer determines the next source and prevents the bed count from becoming a proxy for a different measure.

Keep the CCN when building a shortlist. If you connect it to another CMS file, confirm that file's reporting period and whether it contains one row or several rows per provider. A repeated CCN in a measure-level file can multiply records during a join without representing additional facilities.

For operators and analysts, the ownership and chain columns can guide follow-up research. They should be read as source-reported attributes. A chain name alone cannot establish every legal ownership relationship, and one CCN does not independently prove the boundaries of a physical campus or business entity.

For an occupancy question, use a compatible resident measure and check its definition before forming a ratio. For a staffing or quality question, examine the corresponding evidence directly. The capacity shortlist helps identify records worth investigating; it does not answer those follow-up questions by itself.

What the snapshot leaves unresolved

This is a dated ranking of nursing-home records in the selected CMS snapshot. Changes after the snapshot can affect beds, names, ownership, and operating status.

The file should not be generalized to every U.S. long-term-care facility or every organization marketed as a skilled nursing facility. The ranking's population is the retained CMS nursing-home records, and its unit is a CCN-level provider record.

Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale leads the selected snapshot. Reusing that finding requires keeping the August 2026 date attached to it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a top-100 table end at rank 99?

Two providers have 336 certified beds and share competition rank 99. They occupy the 99th and 100th displayed positions. The next lower bed count would receive rank 101, so no record receives rank 100.

Does the largest nursing home have the most residents?

This ranking does not establish that. Certified beds and Average Number of Residents per Day are separate CMS fields. Compare the resident measure for a compatible reporting period to answer a census question.

Are the names shortened by this article?

No. Names that appear shortened are reproduced from the CMS provider-name field. The CCN remains alongside each name to support identification.
