Top 100 U.S. Long-Term Care Hospitals by CMS-Reported Bed Count in 2026

Tewksbury Hospital leads this ranking with 760 beds in the September 2026 CMS Long-Term Care Hospital General Information snapshot. Hebrew Rehabilitation Center follows with 675, and Henry J Carter Specialty Hospital follows with 411.

The ranking compares Total Number of Beds across eligible CMS long-term care hospital records. It includes 102 hospitals because three records tie at the cutoff. That is the practical consequence of including all hospitals tied at rank 100 instead of cutting off the list arbitrarily.

Long-term care hospitals, often abbreviated LTCHs, should be considered separately from nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities. This analysis uses the facility-level LTCH General Information file, CMS dataset azum-44iv, rather than a nursing-home file, a hospital cost-report file, or a measure-level quality dataset.

The hospitals with the largest reported bed counts

The leading records show how much capacity can vary within a single provider category. Tewksbury Hospital in Massachusetts reports 760 beds under CCN 222003. Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston reports 675 under CCN 222007. Henry J Carter Specialty Hospital in New York reports 411 under CCN 332008.

CMS reports government ownership for Tewksbury and Henry J Carter, and nonprofit ownership for Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. Their certification dates also appear in the source, giving readers another recorded attribute for identification and follow-up.

The largest reported totals are useful starting points for provider research. Before explaining why one record is larger than another, establish what the source field includes and whether the organizations being compared belong to the same CMS provider category.

The first 100 positions, with all cutoff ties

This complete September 2026 table contains 102 hospital records. The first 100 sorted positions reach 61 beds, and all three hospitals tied at that value share rank 100 and are included.

Names, ownership classifications, and certification dates are reproduced as CMS reports them, including abbreviations, apparent truncations, and classifications that may warrant follow-up. They have not been corrected through assumptions about a hospital's name or reputation.

What the bed count tells you

Total Number of Beds is the measure used to order this table. It describes the reported total in the selected CMS snapshot. It should not be substituted for occupied beds, staffed beds, annual admissions, or patient-days.

A hospital can report a large bed total without using every bed at a particular time. Understanding operational capacity would require staffing and occupancy evidence with compatible definitions and dates. Understanding service volume would require admissions or utilization measures.

For a capacity study, define the measure before comparing organizations: reported total beds, staffed beds, and occupied beds answer different questions. This table supplies the first measure and a provider population for further research.

Why this is an LTCH ranking

Facility category determines which records belong in the analysis. The CMS LTCH General Information file provides the hospital records used here, including identity, location, ownership, certification date, and total beds.

The separate LTCH Provider Data file contains quality-measure records. Using that measure-level file as the bed-count population could repeat a hospital across measures and distort the ranking. Nursing-home certified beds describe another population and another source field.

Keeping the source category precise makes the comparison interpretable: each retained row here is one CCN-level hospital record from the selected LTCH general-information file.

How the ranking was calculated

The archived September 2026 CSV contains 311 source rows. Six were excluded because Total Number of Beds was missing, nonnumeric, zero, or negative, leaving 305 eligible records. All retained records are within the 50 states and District of Columbia, and there are no duplicate eligible CCNs.

The calculation orders hospitals by total beds descending. Provider name and CCN determine display order for equal values, while equal bed counts share a competition rank.

The cutoff is 61 beds. Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, Regency Hospital of Northwest Indiana, and Select Specialty Hospital–Northeast Ohio share competition rank 100. Including all three produces a 102-row table.

That tie rule avoids suggesting that one hospital outranks another solely because its name appears earlier alphabetically. Alphabetical order makes the display repeatable; the bed count determines the rank.

Using the list for research

A useful first step is to retain the CCN alongside the provider name. Names can change or resemble one another, while the identifier lets an analyst check connections to other CMS records.

Next, define the research question. A capacity comparison needs compatible bed definitions. A quality comparison needs the relevant measures and reporting periods. An ownership investigation needs evidence of organizational relationships beyond a source-reported classification.

Each proposed join also needs a grain check: one hospital can have several measure-level records in a separate file. Check how many records each CCN contributes before summarizing the joined result. Otherwise a hospital appearing under several measures can look like several hospitals.

Ownership type and certification date can support segmentation or identification. Neither field alone establishes current operating control, and certification date should not be treated as the date of every subsequent organizational change.

When comparing these hospitals with another provider category, keep the measures separate. A nursing home's certified-bed count and an LTCH's total-bed count should not be presented as a universal capacity measure without documenting the differences.

Limits of this comparison

The list represents the selected CMS snapshot and retained population. It does not establish that every organization informally describing itself as a long-term-care hospital is included.

Changes after the release can affect beds, identity, and operating status. Keep the September 2026 snapshot attached whenever the results are reused. Each ranked row represents a CCN-level hospital record; it does not independently establish a physical campus boundary or an ultimate corporate owner.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there 102 hospitals in a top-100 list?

Three hospitals report 61 beds and share competition rank 100. Including every hospital tied at the cutoff adds two records beyond the first 100 sorted positions.

Can I compare these beds directly with nursing-home certified beds?

Treat that as a separate comparison requiring documented definitions. This article uses LTCH Total Number of Beds; the nursing-home ranking uses Number of Certified Beds from a different provider population.

Does a certification date establish current ownership?

No. It is the certification date reported in this file. Ownership changes and corporate relationships require their own dated evidence.
