Pipeline Drug
A pipeline drug is an investigational product still in development and not yet approved by the FDA for the use being studied, tracked by stage from preclinical research through clinical trials and regulatory review.

What is a pipeline drug?
A company's pipeline is its portfolio of products in development. A pipeline drug may be a new molecule that has never been approved, or an approved drug being studied for a new indication, formulation or population, which companies usually list alongside new molecules.
Pipeline drugs are commonly identified by a company code made of letters and numbers until they receive a nonproprietary name and, near approval, a trade name.
Most candidates never reach approval. Many programs fail in Phase 2, when efficacy is first tested in patients, and approval odds vary widely by therapeutic area.
Stages of drug development
A typical U.S. development path runs through these steps:
- Preclinical: laboratory and animal studies assess activity and toxicity to support first human dosing.
- IND: the sponsor files an Investigational New Drug application, and trials may begin 30 days after the FDA receives it unless the FDA places a clinical hold.
- Phase 1: small studies, often in healthy volunteers, focused on safety, dosing and pharmacokinetics.
- Phase 2: studies in patients that gather preliminary evidence of effectiveness and more safety data.
- Phase 3: larger trials that confirm effectiveness and characterize safety to support a New Drug Application (NDA) or Biologics License Application (BLA).
- Review: the FDA reviews applications against goal dates set under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), and programs such as fast track, breakthrough therapy, accelerated approval and priority review can shorten the path.
Why pipeline drugs matter
Pipeline data are forward-looking market intelligence:
- Competitive forecasting: late-stage pipeline drugs signal future competitors for marketed brands, and expected approval dates feed market share models.
- Patent cliff analysis: pipeline depth shows how well a company can replace revenue from brands facing loss of exclusivity.
- Investigator targeting: trial records name sponsors, sites and conditions, which helps identify active research centers and potential key opinion leaders.
- Launch readiness: payers, pharmacies and providers use expected approval timing to plan formulary reviews, budgets and staffing.
Limitations of pipeline data
There is no official registry of all pipeline drugs. The FDA generally does not disclose IND filings or pending applications, federal trial registration requirements do not cover Phase 1 trials, and companies can pause or drop programs without an announcement. Combine trial registrations, FDA designations and company disclosures, and expect gaps.
